Tenth Annual Phil's Big BBQ at the Ballpark Benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County

Phil's Big BBQ at the Ballpark

Fill Up on Phil's BBQ and Baseball to Support Operation Bigs on Sunday, July 29

Phil’s Big BBQ at the Ballpark returns for its 10th year, where attendees can watch the Padres go to bat against the Arizona Diamondbacks after they’ve had their fill of Phil’s. The event is organized by Phil’s BBQ and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of San Diego County. All event proceeds go directly to support Operation Bigs, a program of BBBS, which provides mentors to children of military families. Phil’s goal is to raise $100,000 for the charity, in addition to donating 100 percent of the food — over 5,000 pounds of baby back ribs and mesquite-grilled chicken along with employee volunteer time. The event will be held Sunday, July 29, at the tailgate lot at Petco Park on the corner of 14th and K St.

The event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with mouthwatering Phil’s BBQ, a beer garden, a Kids Zone, live entertainment by the Morgan Leigh Band and more. For $25, guests will enjoy Phil’s ribs and chicken plus two sides, a Coca-Cola beverage and a ticket to the 1:10 p.m. Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks game. “Big League” Tickets are also available for $60, which include everything above plus an upgraded Padres ticket, two drink tickets, VIP entrance, priority food line, VIP seating area with bar access and a fountain drink and candy or popcorn at the game.

To me, it's essential to give back and say thanks to the loyal customers and members of the San Diego community who have contributed to our success. I strongly believe in supporting local families, and especially military families who sacrifice so much for the greater good of our country.

Phil Pace, Phil's BBQ Owner

The BBQ runs until 1 p.m., and the Padres game starts at 1:10 p.m. Adults 21 and over can enjoy $5 drinks at the beer and spirit garden, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting BBBS of San Diego County. The garden will feature Karl Strauss, Ballast Point, Thorn Brewing, Duck Foot Brewing, Benchmark Brewing and Deep Eddy Vodka. At the Kids Zone, children can get their faces painted and enjoy other kids-only activities.

Operation Bigs was launched in 2004 to meet the increasing demand for BBBS from military families stationed at Camp Pendleton. Since its inception, Operation Bigs has served more than 2,638 Navy and Marine Corps children throughout San Diego County and inspired the expansion of over 30 sites across the country.

BBBS of San Diego County will also be recognizing the year’s distinguished mentors or “Bigs of the Year” at the event. These individuals play a vital role in broadening horizons for youth and have become heroes to children just by volunteering their time.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County
For 57 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County has operated under the belief that every child has the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children achieve measurable positive outcomes, including educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors, higher aspirations, greater confidence and healthier relationships. By partnering with parents and guardians, schools, corporations and other community members, Big Brothers Big Sisters carefully pairs children (“Littles”) with screened volunteer mentors (“Bigs”) to monitor and support one-to-one mentoring matches that build safe, enduring relationships. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity, often from single or low-income households or families where a parent is incarcerated or serving in the military, with strong, enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change lives for the better.
